The exact architecture can vary by product, feature, query, and configuration.
That is why GEO should not be reduced to a simple idea such as “put keywords on your page and ChatGPT will rank it.” The real objective is to create information that is clear, accurate, relevant, accessible, and useful within the systems that may discover and use it.

GEO focuses on making that information useful within generative AI experiences.
In practice, you do not have to choose only one. Strong technical foundations, useful content, clear answers, and trustworthy information can support all three approaches.

What Does the Original GEO Research Actually Say?
If you want to understand GEO without relying on marketing claims, it helps to go back to the original research.
The paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization was written by researchers affiliated with institutions including Princeton University and IIT Delhi and was accepted for the ACM SIGKDD Conference in 2024. The researchers introduced GEO as a framework for improving the visibility of website content within generative-engine responses.
The Original GEO Study
The researchers created GEO-bench, a benchmark containing 10,000 queries covering multiple domains and query types. They then tested different ways of modifying website content to see whether those changes affected the visibility of a source within generated responses.
The study evaluated nine content optimization methods, including:
- Adding statistics
- Adding quotations from relevant sources
- Citing sources
- Improving fluency
- Making content easier to understand
- Using an authoritative writing style
- Adding technical terms
- Adding unique words
- Keyword stuffing
The experimental setup first retrieved relevant sources and then used a language model to generate responses from those sources. The researchers also tested their methods on Perplexity.ai as a deployed generative engine.
What Did the Researchers Observe?
The results showed that some content modifications improved the measured visibility of sources in their experiments.
In the GEO-bench experiments, quotation addition and statistics addition produced some of the strongest results, while adding citations and improving fluency also performed better than the unmodified baseline on the study’s visibility metrics. The paper reports that the best-performing methods improved its Position-Adjusted Word Count metric by 41% and its Subjective Impression metric by 28% relative to the baseline.
The study also found that simply using more keywords was not an effective strategy in its experiments. Keyword stuffing performed below the unmodified baseline on the primary visibility measures.
Another important finding was that the effectiveness of different optimization methods varied between domains. In other words, the researchers did not find one content modification that worked identically for every type of query or subject.
What the Study Does Not Prove
The findings are useful, but they should not be turned into a universal GEO formula.
The study does not prove that adding statistics will automatically make ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI system cite a webpage.
It also does not prove that every modern AI search system uses the same ranking or retrieval process. The experiments were conducted using specific research setups and a particular deployed generative engine, rather than every AI product available today.
Most importantly, these results should be understood as experimental evidence about tested content modifications, not as a permanent list of AI ranking factors.
That distinction matters because generative search systems continue to evolve. The safest lesson from the original GEO research is not to chase a secret formula. Instead, use evidence, clear writing, relevant sources, and useful information where they genuinely improve the content.


What Makes a Website More Useful to AI Systems?
There is no verified list of “10 GEO ranking factors” that guarantees a website will appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or another AI system.
Instead, it is more useful to focus on characteristics that make your content clear, accessible, understandable, and genuinely useful.
These are practical content principles—not guaranteed AI ranking factors.
5.1 Clear Answers
Start by answering the main question directly.
If someone searches for “What is a URL shortener?”, don’t make the reader go through five paragraphs before discovering the definition. Give the basic answer first, then explain the details.
A clear answer helps readers understand the topic quickly and gives the rest of the page a strong structure.
5.2 Specific Information
Avoid vague statements such as:
“Our tool provides amazing features for everyone.”
Explain what the tool actually does.
Specific information can include features, limitations, processes, examples, dates, measurements, or other details that are relevant to the topic.
The goal is not to add numbers simply because statistics sound authoritative. Add specific information when it genuinely helps explain or support a point.

When you make an important factual claim, support it with an appropriate source whenever one is available.
For example, research findings should point to the original research, while information about a product or platform is often best supported by its official documentation.
This makes the article easier for readers to verify and prevents unsupported statements from becoming part of your content.

Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables, and logical sections when they improve readability.
Google’s guidance for AI features recommends focusing on helpful, reliable, people-first content and making important content available in textual form.
Good organization is therefore useful for people first—and it can also make the information easier for systems processing the page to interpret.
5.5 Consistent Facts
Keep important information consistent across your website.
If your About page says your company was founded in one year while another page gives a different year, visitors may become confused. The same principle applies to product names, features, pricing information, company descriptions, and other important facts.
Accuracy and consistency are more valuable than trying to make every page sound impressive.
5.6 Demonstrated Expertise
Show why the information on your website deserves attention.
Depending on the topic, this might involve:
- Naming the author or contributor
- Explaining relevant experience
- Linking to original research
- Showing your methodology
- Providing first-hand examples

This does not mean adding an artificial “expert” label to every article. The information itself should demonstrate care and knowledge.

When information can become outdated, review it periodically and update it when necessary. Make sure updates actually reflect reliable information rather than changing dates simply to make an old article appear fresh.
Google’s current guidance for generative AI search emphasizes valuable, unique content and maintaining the technical foundations that allow Search to discover and process pages.
The Main Principle
Think of GEO less as a collection of tricks and more as a content quality and discoverability problem.
Create information that is:
Clear + Specific + Accurate + Well-supported + Well-structured + Accessible
Those qualities do not guarantee an AI citation. But they give your content a much stronger foundation than keyword stuffing, unsupported statistics, or generic AI-generated filler.
Write Content That Answers the Question First
One of the simplest ways to make an article more useful is to answer the reader’s main question before going into the details.
What Is an Answer-First Structure?
An answer-first structure puts the most important information near the beginning of a section instead of making the reader search through several paragraphs to find it.

However, don’t confuse answer-first writing with writing specifically for an imaginary AI ranking algorithm. There is no need to force every paragraph into a particular format simply because you expect an AI system to read it.
The better principle is simple:
Answer the question clearly, then provide the evidence and context needed to understand that answer.
That approach improves the usefulness of the page for human readers while also creating a clear structure for information that other systems may process.
Use Evidence Instead of Marketing Language
If you want your content to be trusted, specific evidence is more useful than impressive-sounding language.
Compare these two statements:

This statement makes several claims but provides no information that allows the reader to verify them.
A more useful version would be:

- Government or official datasets

- Primary documentation from the organization responsible for a product, platform, or standard
The best source depends on the claim. For example, if you are explaining how a particular software product works, the product’s official documentation is generally more useful than a random blog describing it.
Don’t Manufacture Statistics
One of the easiest ways to make an article look authoritative while actually making it less trustworthy is to add numbers without reliable evidence.
For example, if you don’t have a source for the statement:
“Many businesses are using AI search.”
Don’t turn it into:
“87% of businesses are using AI search.”
The second statement sounds more authoritative, but it is only useful if the 87% figure comes from a real, relevant, and verifiable source.
The same rule applies to claims about traffic, conversion rates, AI citations, search visibility, market share, user numbers, or performance improvements.
If a statistic cannot be verified, you have three better options:
- Find a reliable source and cite it.
- Rewrite the statement without the unsupported number.
- Remove the claim completely.
Evidence Should Support the Claim
Don’t add citations simply to make an article look researched. The source should actually support the statement being made.
For example:

That statement can be supported by linking directly to the original GEO research paper.

Structured data can also provide machine-readable information about entities. Why Does Consistency Matter?
Imagine that your homepage describes your company one way, your About page gives a different description, and another profile lists different basic information. Even without discussing AI, that creates an inconsistent picture for visitors and information systems.
Keeping important facts consistent makes your website easier to understand and reduces unnecessary confusion.
However, be careful with the phrase “entity authority.” There is no universal, publicly documented AI ranking factor called entity authority that guarantees a citation or recommendation.
A better approach is to think of entity information as part of clarity, identity, and trust.
Clearly explain who you are, what you provide, and which information belongs to your organization. Then support important claims with appropriate evidence.
The goal is not to manufacture authority.
The goal is to make the real identity and expertise behind your content clear.
Use Structured Data Correctly
Structured data is a standardized way of adding machine-readable information to a webpage. It can help search engines understand what different elements of a page represent.
Google explains that structured data provides explicit clues about the meaning of a page and can help Google understand information about entities and page content.
What Does Structured Data Do?
Depending on the page, structured data can describe things such as:
- An organization
- An article
- A breadcrumb trail
- A product
- A person
- A software application
- Other supported types of content
Google maintains documentation for the structured-data features it supports, including Article, Breadcrumb, Organization, Product, and other structured-data types.
The important word here is appropriate.
You should not add every possible schema type to every page. The markup should accurately describe the content that is actually present on that page.
Which Schema Types Can You Use?
The right type depends on what your page contains.
For example:
Organization
Useful for describing an organization or business and relevant information about it. Google provides specific recommendations in its Organization structured data documentation.
Article
Useful for pages that represent articles or similar editorial content.
BreadcrumbList
Useful for describing the page’s position within a site’s hierarchy.
Product
Relevant when the page actually describes a product and meets the applicable requirements.
Person
Can be relevant when a page is specifically about an identifiable person.
FAQPage
Should only be used when the page genuinely meets the requirements for that structured-data type. Do not add FAQ markup simply because you want additional search visibility.
What Structured Data Does NOT Do
Structured data is not a GEO shortcut.
Adding schema does not guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI features, or another AI system will cite your webpage.
Google explicitly states that even correctly implemented structured data does not guarantee that a corresponding search feature will appear.
The purpose is much more straightforward: describe your content accurately in a standardized, machine-readable format.
Keep the Markup Accurate
Google’s guidelines also say that structured data should represent the actual content of the page and should not contain misleading or irrelevant information.
For implementation, JSON-LD is generally Google’s recommended format, and you can validate applicable markup using Google’s Rich Results Test.
Think of structured data as additional context for machines—not a guarantee of rankings, citations, or recommendations.

What About llms.txt?
You may have heard about a file called llms.txt, which has been proposed as a way for websites to provide AI systems with a concise, structured description of important information.
What Is llms.txt?
The proposal describes placing an llms.txt file on a website to provide background information, guidance, and links to important content in a format intended to be easier for language models or AI agents to process.
The proposal is maintained at llmstxt.org, where it describes llms.txt as a proposed standard rather than an established requirement for websites.
A typical file is placed at the site’s root, such as:
https://example.com/llms.txt
The proposal can also be used at a path level to describe content under a particular section of a website.
Is llms.txt an Official Requirement?
No.
It is important not to describe llms.txt as a universal requirement for SEO or AI visibility. The proposal is an open initiative rather than a universally adopted search-engine standard.
Likewise, there is no reliable basis for saying that simply creating an llms.txt file will make ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI system cite your website.
So, Should You Use It?
You can treat llms.txt as an optional experiment, particularly if your website contains extensive documentation or other information that could benefit from a concise, machine-readable index.
The proposal itself explains that the file is intended to provide useful background information and links to more detailed content.
But don’t let it distract you from the fundamentals.
A website with excellent llms.txt but weak content, confusing navigation, inaccessible pages, or inaccurate information is not suddenly optimized for AI search.
If you decide to implement it, keep the file:
- Accurate
- Concise
- Up to date
- Focused on genuinely useful pages
- Consistent with the information published on your website
Most importantly, treat llms.txt as an optional technical experiment—not a magic GEO ranking signal.
The strongest investment remains the information itself: create useful pages, explain your subject clearly, support important claims, and make your website accessible to users and relevant search systems.
Don’t Ignore External Sources and Community Content
Your own website is not the only place where information about your topic exists.
Depending on the platform, query, and search experience, AI systems may encounter information from different types of sources, including news publications, industry websites, research papers, forums, community discussions, reviews, and official documentation.
This means your website can benefit from having a genuine presence within the broader information environment surrounding your topic.
For example, a software company may publish detailed documentation on its own website, while independent publications review the product, researchers discuss the underlying technology, and users share their experiences in online communities.
What About Reddit?
Reddit and other community platforms can sometimes appear among the sources used in AI-powered search experiences. However, this does not mean that getting positive mentions on Reddit is a GEO ranking strategy.
You should never create fake accounts, manufacture reviews, repeatedly promote your own business, or manipulate discussions simply to generate mentions.
Instead, participate where you can genuinely contribute.
You might:
- Answer questions related to your area of expertise.
- Share useful information when it is relevant.
- Correct inaccurate information respectfully.
- Explain how your product or service actually works.
- Link to your website when the link genuinely helps answer the question.
The same principle applies to reviews and other third-party platforms. Genuine customer experiences are more valuable than artificially created praise.
The objective is not to make the internet say good things about your brand. It is to build a genuine and consistent presence around your subject.
External visibility can support your overall reputation, but it should never replace the quality of the information published on your own website.
Most importantly, don’t assume that appearing on a particular platform guarantees an AI citation or recommendation. AI systems can change how they retrieve, evaluate, and present information, so there is no universal community-platform formula for GEO.

Create Content AI Can Verify
Good content should not simply make claims. It should give readers enough context to understand where those claims came from and how they were produced.
Consider this example:
Weak:
“Our tool is one of the fastest URL shorteners available.”
The problem is not necessarily that the statement is false. The problem is that “one of the fastest” is difficult to evaluate without a defined comparison.
A more useful statement would be:
“In our published test, Tool X generated a shortened URL in an average of [specific time] under [specific test conditions].”
Now the claim has a framework that someone can evaluate.
Make Important Claims Traceable
When publishing original data, comparisons, experiments, or other factual claims, consider documenting:
- Source — Where did the information come from?
- Date — When was the information collected or published?
- Methodology — How was the result measured?
- Context — What conditions apply to the claim?
- Limitations — What does the information not tell us?
This approach is particularly important when publishing statistics, performance comparisons, market information, research findings, or product claims.
For example, saying that a product “increased conversions by 40%” is incomplete without explaining what was measured, during which period, for which users, and under what conditions.
Traceable information gives human readers a way to evaluate your claims instead of asking them to simply trust marketing language. It can also provide clearer source material for systems that process and retrieve information from webpages.
However, traceability is not a guarantee of AI visibility. Adding a methodology section does not automatically make a page rank in an AI system.
The real objective is accuracy.
If you have original data, explain how you obtained it. If you are reporting someone else’s research, link to the original source. If you are making a company claim, provide appropriate first-party evidence.
And if you cannot support a statement, don’t make it sound more certain than the available evidence allows.
A specific, limited, well-supported claim is better than a dramatic claim that nobody can verify.
How to Optimize an Existing Article for GEO
You don’t always need to create a completely new article to improve your website’s usefulness for AI-powered search. In many cases, an existing article can be improved by making its information clearer, more complete, and easier to evaluate.
Use the following workflow when reviewing an older page.
Step 1: Identify the Main Question
Determine exactly what the article is trying to answer. Remove unnecessary topics that distract from the primary search intent.
Step 2: Write a Direct Answer
Give the reader a concise answer near the beginning of the relevant section. Then provide the deeper explanation afterward.
Step 3: Break Up Long Paragraphs
Turn large blocks of text into shorter paragraphs, lists, tables, or subsections where they genuinely improve readability.
Step 4: Add Useful Headings
